The Sindh government has set a two-month deadline to complete the restoration of Khiyam Canal in Clifton, Karachi, alongside measures to divert sewage water and improve sanitation in the surrounding area.
Sindh Minister for Local Government, Housing and Town Planning Syed Nasir Hussain Shah announced the timeline during a visit to the canal, where he inspected ongoing development work following complaints from local residents about construction activities and conditions around the waterway.
The project aims to address foul odours, reduce sanitation-related health risks and improve the overall appearance of the area through drainage improvements, clean-water arrangements and additional greenery.
Khiyam Canal Restoration to Be Completed in Two Months
During his visit, Nasir Hussain Shah said the restoration work and diversion of sewage water would be completed within the stipulated two-month period.
He explained that the Sindh Local Government Department was carrying out the project to address drainage and sanitation problems affecting residents living near the canal.
The minister said the initiative was intended to improve the existing drainage system while restoring the canal and making the surrounding environment cleaner and more attractive.
The project is expected to help reduce the unpleasant smell associated with sewage and improve conditions for people living in the area.
Sewage Diversion Planned to Improve Sanitation
One of the main components of the project is the diversion of sewage water away from Khiyam Canal.
The plan also involves covering the drain to address sanitation-related issues and improve conditions around the waterway.
Sewage accumulation and foul odours can create an uncomfortable environment for nearby residents. The planned drainage measures are intended to address these problems and support a healthier surrounding area.
According to the minister, the project focuses on both improving drainage infrastructure and restoring the canal as part of a broader effort to improve the locality.
The effectiveness of these measures will depend on their timely completion and the proper management of sewage and drainage systems after the work is finished.
Clean-Water Canal and Greenery Included in Plan
The restoration initiative also includes plans to develop a clean-water canal as part of the area’s beautification.
Nasir Hussain Shah said greenery and tree plantation would be introduced along the canal’s surroundings to improve the area’s appearance.
The planned improvements are intended to create a cleaner and more pleasant environment for residents while enhancing the visual appeal of the locality.
The combination of drainage improvements, clean-water arrangements and plantation is expected to make the canal’s surroundings more attractive once the project is completed.
However, the announced deadline remains a key milestone, as residents will be looking for visible improvements in sanitation and environmental conditions.
Minister Addresses Concerns Over Construction
The minister also addressed concerns raised by residents regarding commercial construction activities around Khiyam Canal.
He said he had visited the site to review the complaints and understand the issues affecting people living nearby. He added that the chief minister of Sindh had also taken notice of the matter.
Shah categorically stated that no encroachment or unrelated construction was taking place as part of the project.
He further clarified that no commercial activities had been authorised or were being permitted under the restoration initiative.
The minister said the project’s primary objective was to facilitate residents, improve environmental conditions and restore Khiyam Canal rather than promote commercial development.
His clarification comes amid public concerns about construction work and the future use of the area surrounding the canal.
Sindh Government Responds to Residents’ Complaints
The minister’s visit followed complaints from residents about conditions around Khiyam Canal and ongoing construction activities.
By inspecting the development work and responding to concerns, the provincial government has sought to clarify the project’s purpose and its expected benefits.
Residents are particularly concerned about foul odours, sewage-related problems and the overall condition of the surrounding environment.
The announced restoration plan is intended to address these issues through infrastructure improvements and beautification measures.
The project’s progress will be important in determining whether the proposed changes deliver the expected improvements to daily life in the area.
What Residents Can Expect
If completed as announced, the project is expected to bring several improvements to the area around Khiyam Canal.
These include better management of sewage water, reduced foul odours, improved sanitation and additional greenery along the canal’s surroundings.
The clean-water canal and plantation plans are also intended to improve the area’s appearance.
The two-month deadline provides a clear timeline for the restoration work. Residents will now be looking for the completion of the drainage measures and visible progress on the beautification plan.
The minister reiterated that the project would be completed within the announced period, with the aim of providing residents with a cleaner and healthier environment.
While the government has outlined its plans and timeline, the final impact will depend on the quality of the completed work and the continued maintenance of the drainage and canal systems.
