Jeans, Tights banned for girls in Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University

The Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University (SBBWU) in Peshawar has instituted a new “modest” dress code for its students, prohibiting the wearing of jeans and tights on campus.
The university’s registrar office issued a formal notification in this regard, asking students to strictly follow the new dress code.
“Students must wear knee-length kurtas, shalwars, and white dupattas as part of the new dress code,” according to the notification.
The university ordered students to wear their student ID cards on campus, warning them that the new code would be implemented only after approval from the registrar’s office, and that violators would face a Rs1,000 fine.

The issue of implementing a new dress code was not new, as former governor Shah Farman directed all public universities to change their open dress code policy after receiving complaints that sexual harassment was on the rise in K-P varsities.
As a member of the highly conservative JUI-F, K-P Governor Haji Ghulam Ali appeared to be following in the footsteps of his predecessor.
Previously, the Hazara University Abbotabad, the Bacha Khan University Charsadda, and the University of Peshawar implemented dress codes that drew widespread criticism.
The Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) instituted a dress code in March 2021, requiring female students to wear an abaya.
KUST administration directed its boy students to wear white shalwar kameez or grey dress pants with black shoes in a notification issued on 9 March.

The female students were instructed to wear white shalwar with any full-sleeved kameez, a scarf, dupata, chaddar, black abaya, and black shoes. They had to wear black sweaters, coats, or plain jackets with black abayas in the winter.
Furthermore, faculty members were instructed to dress formally in a black gown in class.
