Jazz Network Accused of Being Caught Red-Handed in Gas Theft

A multinational mobile phone company operating in Pakistan has been caught red-handed engaging in gas theft from a main pipeline located in Karak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Per information contained in a First Information Report (FIR) filed by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) against this particular mobile phone service provider, the distributor recently launched a significant crackdown on gas pilfering following directives from the federal government.

As per an SNGPL spokesperson, the company’s regional team conducted a raid on a mobile phone tower in the Karak district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. During the raid, it was discovered that the generator powering the mobile phone tower was operating through an unauthorized gas connection.

The FIR disclosed that the tower in question was being operated by Jazz. The personnel stationed at the tower were found using a 200 ft pipe to illicitly siphon gas from the main 8-inch gas line. Consequently, the SNGPL team confiscated the generator, pipe, and other equipment used for this unauthorized gas usage.

In response, the gas distributor has also filed an FIR against the employees of the telecom company.

A spokesperson from Jazz informed, stating, “Jazz is in full compliance with all relevant laws and operates its network using legitimate electricity or fuel arrangements nationwide. In this regard, Jazz has established agreements with third-party vendors for generator fueling at sites as a backup power solution. Furthermore, Jazz does not employ natural gas for operating any sites in Pakistan, and vehemently denies such claims.”

“Meanwhile, the company has initiated an internal investigation to gather further details about the specific site in question and will take necessary action accordingly. Any attempts to damage the reputation of a multinational company that has invested over $10.5 billion in the country through unfounded allegations will be treated with the utmost seriousness,” the spokesperson added.
