Islamabad police have assured transporters that owners will receive rent for containers used for maintaining law and order.
Inspector General of Police Captain (Retd) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry gave the assurance on Tuesday. He met representatives of the All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association.
The meeting focused on concerns over commercial vehicles and containers being taken into custody. Transporters had raised concerns about the financial impact of these actions.
According to the decision, owners of Seized Containers will be paid rent. The payment will cover the period during which their containers remain in police use.
The police also agreed to return certain containers used for public order arrangements. This decision is expected to address some concerns raised by transporters.
Containers carrying medicines will be returned to their owners immediately. The same applies to containers carrying food and other perishable goods.
The move is aimed at preventing delays involving essential and time-sensitive cargo. It will also allow transporters to resume normal commercial operations.
Officials from the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance attended the meeting. Deputy Inspector General Headquarters Jawad Tariq was also present.
Transporters had earlier expressed concerns about the seizure of commercial vehicles. Their concerns reportedly extended to Islamabad and other areas.
The issue has created financial pressure for transport operators. Seized Containers can remain unavailable for commercial use during law enforcement arrangements.
Earlier reports indicated that vehicle seizures had caused losses of around Rs. 50-80 crore. The transporters’ union has also warned of potentially higher losses.
An advocate representing the transporters’ union said cargo damage could increase the financial impact. Canceled shipments could also add to the losses.
According to the union’s concerns, these combined factors could eventually result in losses worth billions of rupees.
The latest agreement provides a mechanism for compensating container owners. It also addresses the return of containers carrying essential and perishable goods.
The police and transport representatives discussed the matter to reduce disruption to commercial transport. The agreed measures focus on both public order needs and transporters’ concerns.
The payment of rent will apply to containers used by authorities for maintaining law and order. Owners will receive compensation for the period of official use.
The return of essential cargo containers is expected to help prevent further delays. It may also reduce potential losses for businesses relying on timely deliveries.
