Apple Set to Unveil iPhone 15: USB-C Transition and Faster Charging in Focus

In the upcoming weeks, Apple is gearing up to reveal the iPhone 15, a move that has sparked discussions about its shift from the Lightning port to USB-C, which could potentially bring about quicker charging speeds.

According to a report from 9to5Mac, specific versions of the forthcoming iPhone 15 models are anticipated to support charging speeds reaching 35W. This marks a significant advancement compared to the current iPhone 14 Pro, which is restricted to a 27W charging cap.

Prominent Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also predicted a similar change last year. He hinted that information from the company’s supply chain indicated a shift away from the Lightning port in favor of USB-C by 2023. Kuo emphasized that this transition would enable faster charging for the iPhone 15 Pro models, although this improvement might necessitate the use of Apple-approved cables.

Apple notably ceased providing power adapters with its iPhones in 2020 as part of an effort to combat electronic waste. As a result, the company may recommend using the dual USB-C charger with a 35W output introduced last year or the 30W USB-C charger designed for the MacBook Air. Whether Apple plans to introduce a dedicated charger specifically for the iPhone 15 remains uncertain.

Regardless of the exact charging speed, it’s highly likely that the iPhone 15 will mark the shift to USB-C charging. This transition is driven by the European Union’s requirement that all newly sold phones within its jurisdiction, including iPhones, adopt USB-C for wired charging by December 28th, 2024. Failing to comply within this timeframe could pose challenges for Apple.
