Hospital’s Operation Theatre Sealed After Tragic Patient Death

Officials from the Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority (IHRA) have taken decisive action in response to the death of a patient during a routine ankle surgery at a private health facility in the city. As part of the ongoing investigation, IHRA has sealed one of the operation theatres and requested the administration of Zimri Hospital G-8 and surgeon Dr. Fareedullah Zimri to provide explanations.

The unfortunate incident occurred on July 12, 2023, when 54-year-old Muhammad Sajid underwent ankle surgery at the orthopedic health facility after fracturing his ankle. Regrettably, during the surgery, Sajid suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be revived by the medical team.

Following the patient’s death, Sajid’s son lodged a complaint with the healthcare authority, urging a comprehensive investigation to determine the underlying causes of his father’s untimely demise. The complainant alleged that the hospital administration failed to adequately assess the patient’s fitness for the surgery.

Moreover, the family was not informed when the patient experienced complications during the procedure, and efforts to summon another anesthetist from PIMS Islamabad were unsuccessful as the patient passed away before their arrival.

The private hospital involved in this incident is registered with IHRA, but it was revealed that its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) had not been utilized for patient care.

This tragic event emphasizes the critical importance of thorough medical evaluations prior to surgical procedures and effective communication with patients and their families during medical emergencies. As IHRA conducts its investigation, both the healthcare community and the public eagerly await the findings, hopeful that lessons will be learned to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.
