The electricity relief currently benefiting consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi, is set to end this month. This could lead to higher electricity bills from September 2026.
Consumers have been receiving quarterly adjustment relief of Rs1.99 per unit since June 2026. The relief is scheduled to complete its term in August and has provided consumers with a total benefit of more than Rs67.17 billion.
Following the expiry of the relief, the quarterly adjustment for April to June 2026 may be implemented from September. This could result in higher electricity rates for consumers across the country.
Electricity distribution companies have submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), proposing an additional financial burden of more than Rs23 billion on consumers. The proposed increase is estimated at around Rs1 per unit.
However, the final decision will be made by NEPRA after reviewing the request and relevant calculations. The regulator could approve, modify, or reject the proposed adjustment.
If approved, consumers could face higher electricity costs from September following the end of the existing relief. The actual impact on monthly bills will depend on the final rate approved and individual electricity consumption.
The possible increase could add to the financial pressure on households and businesses already dealing with high electricity costs. Karachi consumers could also be affected under the applicable tariff arrangements.
The end of the Rs1.99 per unit relief means consumers will no longer receive the current benefit from the next billing period. The upcoming NEPRA decision will therefore be closely watched by electricity consumers across Pakistan.
