The Chahan Dam water supply project in Rawalpindi is expected to be completed by December 2027, bringing clean drinking water to more than 250,000 residents. The Rs35 billion project aims to improve access to safe drinking water and strengthen the city’s water supply system.
Punjab Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Minister Bilal Yasin announced the expected completion timeline during a visit to the project site. He reviewed construction progress, including work on the water filtration plant.
The project is being funded jointly by the Punjab government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Construction began in October 2024 and is expected to continue until the planned completion date.
Rs35 Billion Project to Improve Water Supply
The Chahan Dam water supply project is designed to address the need for clean drinking water in Rawalpindi. With a growing population and increasing demand for basic services, a reliable water supply remains an important issue for residents across the city.
Once completed, the project is expected to benefit more than 250,000 people. Its water filtration facilities are intended to help provide treated water for domestic use.
During the visit, officials from the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) briefed the minister on the project’s progress and ongoing construction work. The minister reviewed the filtration plant and received updates on the development activities.
The total estimated cost of the project is Rs35 billion. Funding from the Punjab government and the Asian Development Bank is supporting the scheme.
Punjab Government Highlights Benefits for Residents
Bilal Yasin described the project as a gift from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to the people of Rawalpindi. He said it would improve access to clean drinking water and support essential civic services in different parts of the city.
Access to safe drinking water is important for public health and everyday life. A dependable supply can reduce residents’ reliance on alternative water sources and help households meet their daily needs.
However, the actual impact will depend on the project’s timely completion, the operation of its treatment facilities and the effective distribution of water to the areas it is designed to serve.
Completion Expected in December 2027
Work on the project started in October 2024, and the authorities have set December 2027 as the expected completion date. Construction progress and the development of the filtration plant will remain important factors in meeting this timeline.
Residents will have to wait until the project is completed and its water supply system becomes operational to see its full benefits.
The Chahan Dam scheme is among the major infrastructure projects intended to improve basic services in Rawalpindi. If completed as planned, it is expected to provide clean drinking water to more than a quarter of a million people and help address the city’s water supply needs.
