The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is planning to introduce a double-decker electric bus service in Islamabad to promote tourism and offer residents and visitors a new way to explore the city.
According to CDA sources, the authority has recently approached Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed service. HIT has also been asked to provide cost estimates for procuring the buses. The CDA will decide its next steps after receiving the technical and financial input.
Under the initial plan, four double-decker electric buses would be operated on a 25-kilometre city tour. The proposed route would start from F-9 Park and pass through several major tourist and recreational attractions in Islamabad.
The planned tour would include popular locations such as Faisal Mosque, Lok Virsa and Shakarparian. The service is expected to provide tourists with an easier and more convenient way to visit some of the capital’s most well-known landmarks during a single trip.
A CDA official said the authority could make the service operational within three months if the plan moves forward smoothly. However, the official clarified that no final decision has been made yet regarding the procurement of the buses.
The CDA is also considering importing the double-decker buses from China. The authority is currently waiting for HIT’s input before deciding whether to proceed with local arrangements or explore imported options.
The proposed buses would be fully electric, making the planned tourism service an environment-friendly addition to Islamabad’s public transport system. The move also fits with the city’s ongoing expansion of electric public transport.
The CDA already operates an electric bus service through a private contractor on more than 20 routes across Islamabad. The existing fleet consists of more than 160 electric buses. The service has reportedly received a strong response from residents, with a large number of passengers using the buses every day.
The proposed tourism buses would serve a different purpose by focusing on sightseeing rather than regular public transport routes. If introduced, the service could give both local residents and visitors another option for exploring Islamabad.
The CDA has also announced plans for a tram service in Islamabad several times in the past. However, those proposals have not yet been implemented. The latest double-decker electric bus plan is now at the feasibility and consultation stage, with further decisions expected after HIT provides its assessment.
