7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Japan, Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful Earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude struck northern Japan on Monday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Authorities quickly issued a tsunami warning, alerting residents to possible waves reaching up to three metres.

The Earthquake occurred at 4:53 pm local time in the Pacific Ocean, near the coast of Iwate prefecture. The tremors were strong and were felt across a wide area. Buildings in Tokyo, located hundreds of kilometres away, also experienced noticeable shaking.

Officials warned that tsunami waves could reach the northern coastline within a short time. Emergency alerts were issued, urging people to evacuate immediately. Residents living near coastal and riverside areas were advised to move to higher ground or designated evacuation buildings.

Authorities emphasized that tsunami waves may arrive repeatedly. People were instructed to remain in safe areas until the warning is officially lifted. The situation remains under close monitoring by disaster response teams.

Initial footage from national broadcaster NHK did not show major damage in key port areas. However, officials cautioned that conditions can change quickly. Emergency services are assessing the situation across affected regions.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed that a crisis management team has been activated. The government is working to gather information about possible injuries or damage. She urged citizens to follow safety instructions and remain alert.

Japan is known for frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” The country sits on four major tectonic plates, making it highly prone to earthquakes. On average, Japan experiences around 1,500 tremors each year.

While many of these are minor, stronger events like this Earthquake can pose serious risks. The level of damage often depends on the location and depth of the quake. Coastal areas are especially vulnerable due to the threat of tsunamis.

Experts say preparedness plays a key role in reducing the impact of such disasters. Japan has advanced early warning systems and strict building codes. These measures help limit damage and protect lives during major events.
