PESHAWAR: According to news, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Governor Haji Ghulam Ali named veteran bureaucrat Azam Khan as the interim chief minister on Saturday. The opposition and the government agreed on Azam Khan as the caretaker candidate for the job of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chief minister (CM), and the governor then issued the notification.

Mahmood Khan, the chief minister of KP, and Akram Khan Durrani, the leader of the opposition, met at the Speaker’s House yesterday and came to an agreement. According to Clause (IA) of Article 224 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (1973), the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has appointed Mr. M. Azam Khan as the caretaker chief minister of the province.

On the recommendation of Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly had been dissolved on January 18. The development also occurs a few days after the Punjab Assembly was dissolved. Azam Khan is a retired bureaucrat and former chief secretary besides having a good reputation in the province

He had served as the KP finance minister, federal secretary in Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources and federal secretary Ministry of Religious Affairs. Earlier, he held important positions in the KP government where he served as the Chief Secretary and secretary of different ministries. Azam Khan graduated from the University of Peshawar, following which he went to Lincoln’s Inn, London to complete his Barrister-at-Law degree.
