England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are under investigation following an alleged nightclub incident after England’s Test victory over New Zealand at Lord’s, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Monday. The governing body said it is examining a potential breach of team protocols.
According to the ECB statement, both players were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident reportedly took place. However, officials have not disclosed further details about what occurred, saying they are currently gathering additional information before taking any further action.
The ECB added that a formal announcement regarding the squad for the second Test against New Zealand will be made in due course. The second match of the three-Test series is scheduled to begin on June 17 at The Oval, increasing scrutiny over team selection and player availability.
The development comes at a sensitive time for English cricket, which has already faced criticism over discipline and off-field behaviour. Earlier this year, the team came under scrutiny following their Ashes defeat, with reports of late-night drinking during a mid-tour break raising questions about team culture.
Further concerns about player conduct have also surfaced in recent months, including incidents involving senior members of the squad in overseas tours. These repeated controversies have placed additional pressure on the team management and head coach Brendon McCullum, who has continued in his role following an ECB review.
Ben Stokes has faced disciplinary issues in the past, most notably a 2017 incident outside a Bristol nightclub that led to legal proceedings before he was later cleared. The latest investigation adds renewed attention to his leadership as England captain.
The ECB has previously introduced stricter behavioural guidelines, including curfews, aimed at improving discipline within the squad. Officials are now expected to determine whether those protocols were breached in the latest incident involving Stokes and Atkinson.
